Sunfall News Previous years here. Wow, we were on NPR's Open Mic today. It's been a while since we've had any media spotlight. Gracias NPR. September 20, 2004 Can you believe it? After two years of silence the Sunfall crew is stepping on stage. Oct. 15th and 16th we'll be playing. We'll also be releasing an album we've been sitting on, 'Bang Bang Bang.' Come one, come all. Tell your friends. Tell your friends' friends. We're really excited to see everyone...
June 14th, 2003 Huge congrats to Amy and her hubby on the birth of their son Coen!
He arrived Tuesday, June 10th 4:44 pm weighing 7 lbs 2 oz. He's a little
dark blond version of Amy and Yoni. Mom is doing fantastic. May 23, 2003 Had a chance to visit with Amy the other day. Her little boy is due in a few weeks. Amy looks great. She just looks like cute little Amy with a big basketball up her shirt. While we all wait for the new album to come out, Amy has been singing on some hip hop and dance tunes. If we get a link to any mp3s, we'll for sure slap 'em up here. In the mean time, here's to Amy, her husband, and their new little kid.
April 25, 2003 Last night's show with Paul Jacobsen was extremely fun. Special thanks to those long lost Sunfallers we hadn't seen in so, so long.
April 17, 2003 So, here's a LOT of information for you to soak in. Enjoy: First, many already know that Amy is nearing the end of her pregnancy and will soon be bringing a cute little boy into the world. Congrats to her and her hubby. Second, Scott and George recently had babies as well (not together, and it was actually their wives that had the babies, Oliver and Lilli, respectively). And you thought Sunfall wasn't "busy." We're just creating Sunfall version 2.0. The band will be called Sunfall Kidz. DigDug is still looking for a girl to kiss him, so no children on the way from him. Chris is allergic to children (except the Sunfall Kidz). NEXT, four out of five of the Sunfall crew will be playing a live show this Thursday (April 24th) with our good friend Paul Jacobsen. Paul is releasing his first solo album. We all had the pleasure of working on this album with Paul and are happy to back him up as he debuts these amazing new set of songs. Scott, George, DigDug and Chris will all be there. No word yet if Amy can make it. Be sure to come out to celebrate the good times. And finally, the new album. Have we used the words "coming soon" enough yet? If so, then we'll just say, the album is in it's third trimester. Be sure to sign up for the mailing list so you get fair warning and enter to win one of the many free copies we'll be giving out. That's all for now. Sunfall.
January 20 About to watch our friend Vienna Teng play on David Letterman. Knock em dead.
January 1 Happy 2003!
December 2 A few of you have asked about the Christmas song we recorded. Well, it's been released on a new album (produced by our very own Scott W). Take a listen to some samples over here (our track is lucky number 13). November 27 GeekAmerica had this to say
about our latest album...'Monday 23' The packaging for their self released cd is phenomenal, watercolor artwork on vellum paper that is so effective you’d think somebody would have done this long ago. It’s this attention to detail, whether it be packaging, writing or recording that will carry Sunfall Festival into upper class of musicians; possibly not in record sales or popularity, but certainly in reputation." Who needs record sales or popularity after a review like that? If you're interested in knowing when our new album comes out, please sign our private mailing list.
September 20 The new album might be out sooner than you think! No specific release date yet, but let's just say it's time to start saving your left-over pocket change. Sign up for the mailing list and we'll let you know when it's ready. September 6 Both Scott (guitar) and Chris (drums) have been pulling double duty as of late. Scott produced the new Jerrytown album and is playing with the band, and Chris recently joined up with our good friends Hudson River School (just voted "Band of the Year" in Utah). HRS just returned from touring with Superdrag and will be touring soon with Ultimate Fakebook. Sunfall will appear on a compilation with Low, the Aquabats, Coastal, and Majestic. It's a brand new song from our forthcoming album that you aint never heard before, so get a copy if you feel so inclined. Phew, that's a lot of news for one day. September 1 Oh, how I wish we had some news to share with you. Nothing too exciting. Just a nice summer vacation wrapping up. Scott's at the beach, George is in the valley, Chris is on the border of Canada (the other white meat), Dig Dug is in his cave, and no one seems to know where Amy is. Rockstars, they're weirdoes. But how we're loving the Dig Dug column! If I had a choice between a new album from Sunfall or an autobiography from Dig Dug, I'm not sure which I would choose. How about you? Discuss. July 17 An interesting article on Mormons in "rock" (in which Sunfall was mentioned along side Low, Tal Bachman, Randy Bachman and some Utah favorites -- sorry, no mention of the Osmonds Second Generation). Scroll down near the end of the article to the section headed "Bloody Fingers and Prayers." That's where you'll find us. All else is well. Needless to say from our lack of news entries and live shows, we're enjoying a short break from The Rock. Not sure when or where they will air, but we've been asked to have our music in some Plymouth ads. Sellouts. June 29 Our friends from Gift Anon just slipped us their newest EP. Very pretty, mellow indie rock. I'd recommend it (it's only $5, how can you go wrong?) June 20 Although we should be working on our own music right now (see the post about losing half the album to an evil computer crash), we're instead doing some studio work with our good friend Paul Jacobsen. Very cool album he has coming along. Be on the lookout. Speaking of good albums, our friends Gift Anon have finished up a five-song EP that is quite tasty. Go check out samples. June 10 What is it with Sunfall outdoor shows and mother nature? Last time we played downtown SLC during the Olympics our fingers almost fell off. Granted, it was winter, but days prior had been just fine. Same situation on Saturday night. We had beautiful spring weather for weeks, then Blam!, Sunfall plays downtown SLC and Mr. Winter decided to blow through. Huge props to all who stuck it out in the cold and bounced up and down to the songs. It's always quite amazing to see that kind of devotion. And how we love the homeless! We're always lucky to have a few homeless individuals show up at the free outdoor shows and dance, dance, dance. Hands down, they have the best moves out of anyone. It was great seeing Hudson River School again. Such nice guys and very deserving of all the success that's come their way. May 29 Some cool shows coming up. Getting ready for another round of sessions in the studio (this time we plan on backing up data often - Scott literally threw up twice when we found out the whole week of recording was corrupt). However, sometimes mishaps like that can be blessings in disguise. Going back to the studio always allows us the pleasure of writing new music while warming up for "real takes." At times, the new stuff blows the rehearsed stuff out of the water. Something about the magic of the moment. Everyone just got back from much needed vacations. The rhythm section went to NYC. Vocal section went to Cancun. Dig Dug counted his money. Have you checked out our latest "love song?" May 19 We have a winner of the Danelectro/Sunfall guitar. We'll announce her name as soon as we can convince her that hard-core fans won't try to kill her. May 1 Oh computer....why doest thou hate us so much?? After a VERY productive week in the studio, new songs, and tons of overdubs, the computer decided to output our tracks into thin air. Yes, we lost it all. So...back to the studio we go to try and re-capture the energy we had that week. "Cheetah" was about as good as it gets, even our producer was drooling. Good news, we burned a few CDs to listen to before heading back in to finish, so at least we have a reference of the songs for the next session. One of the songs was so live and natural feeling, that we're keeping it as is, burned on the CD. George is going on a short vacation, then we'll all head back into the studio to re-track the rest. As for the FREE guitar we're giving away...we're organizing all the names into a giant virtual hat and will let you know shortly.... April 23 Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Amy and 'Monday 23-eeee.' Happy birthday to you. April 22 We had another little happy accident last week in the studio. Once again, George was noodling on a little riff, Chris was in his own world playing a beat, Amy was sitting in the control room and heard the two merge and yelled, "That's it!" She ran into her vocal booth and before we new it, we had quite a peppy little tune written and recorded, live. We love it when that happens. The last album had one of those (Anemic) and it still is one of the most requested live songs to date. Pretty productive set of sessions in the studio. Six songs in four days several of them brand spanking new. The pressure was on, and Sunfall delivered. Our producer Paul Fox keeps calling from L.A. saying, "You gotta have a lot more songs! More songs! More songs! Labels eat bands with few songs for breakfast! More songs or death! Aaahhhhhh!" So basically he scared some new songs out of us. A few of them pretty sweet if we do say so ourselves. Of course song titles are always works in progress, but keep your ears open for "Cheetah," "Jimmy Eat Sunfall," "We Did It," and "Choose to Be." Writing in the studio is the most fun activity in the world. Be sure to come hear the new tunes this Friday night at the KOHS benefit show. Details, details, details. April 16 Did you do your taxes? Sunfall needs to have some more band babies so we get some tax credits and come out positive. Hey! We're playing a show for the coolest radio station around KOHS in Orem Ut. This indie station needs some new gear, so they're having a benefit concert to benefit themselves. We're headlining, so come on out and support the scene and the greatest high school station around. More details here. By the way, the leather armbands and t-shirts seem to be a hit. No shipping, so get em while they last. March 20 A few people been out of town, so practices halted for a week. Scott is in LA mastering an album (wish we could say it's ours, but we're not that close), and George was in Idaho or something. But, back to writing more songs and practicing for the next few weeks, another show at Muse Music on April 5. Great turnout last show. There's talk that the "scene" is back on the rise. We're really glad to be a part of it. Local shows=fun. Touring=experience. Rumor has it Amy cut some hair off March 7 Very productive rehearsal tonight. Be prepared to hear two brand spanking new songs this Saturday. After recording and performing the same songs over, and over, and over, and over again, it's nice to have new material that we feel strongly enough about to play at shows. If the hard-core fans do some quick math, they'll realize we have quite a few new songs....enough for a new album?? Hmmmm, we'll have to see....from the looks of the message boards, we need to get some new shirts, decals, and bumper stickers or we're gonna have us an angry mob. March 4 Feb. 27 Feb. 22 Feb. 15 Jan. 31 The sessions with Paul Fox are winding to a close. More tracking for another week or so, then it's back to LA to mix and give a little rest to the ears. Sorry for not keeping this as updated and interactive as some of you had asked. BUT, we've posted some new photos and plan on getting some new video up soon so you can hear the new songs. Everything is just so new these days. What have we been learning from working with a top producer like Paul?
Well, we've learned (click each lesson for the accompanying photo): It's strange to hand our songs to someone and let him work his own interpretation's. Seven years together, and it's something we've never tried. There's a loss of control, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's refreshing to just play as emotionally as possible...putting everything you can into the performance...and then walk away knowing the rest of the work will be taken care of. We know Paul is good at what he does, so trusting our original decision to work with him is easy. Jan. 26 Fourth day of recording. Not keeping as great a journal as we thought, but Paul really has us working hard. The time we do get away from the studio, we just want to sit back and relax and snuggle with that special someone. We had most of the morning off while Paul "pro-tooled" around with the "Trilobite" takes from last evening. He says the song has a particular swagger and sleaziness that could be widely accepted. It's sounding very big and fat. He made Chris go through 2 pair of thick sticks and a new drum head from hitting so hard. "The bigger the hit, the bigger the sound." He also seemed quite perturbed when the second set of sticks flew across the room, only to find we didn't anticipate breaking any sticks and had only two pair....so we sat around for an hour while an intern made the trek up to Salt Lake for 10 pair of sticks. Paul and George are trying to get the right bass sound for "Bang, Bang, Bang" right now. Amy is rushing to finish lyrics for the new chorus (it's pretty much a brand new song with elements of "Bang, Bang, Bang" this may bother the hard-cores who really like the song the way it is, but it does have a new section that you can grab on to much easier). As soon as they get the bass sound together we'll head in for an evening of tracking this song. Jan. 23 First day down with Paul. Actually, it's 9 pm and we're just getting ready to start again after an hour break. Back to pre-production. Started the day playing him our newest songs, then choosing which ones we'd work on for the next few weeks. He's already taken "Bang, Bang, Bang" and twisted it around quite nicely. It's a bit hard to get used to dramatically changing a song that's been played a certain way for months and months, but hey, we trust him....that's why we had him come and produce us. Pre-production has to be the most tiring part of the process. Not only are you physically drained from playing for 10 hours straight, but you're mentally drained as well. A lot of thinking and rethinking. Anyway, looks like we have to head back in to the rehearsal room. When the grueling stuff is over we'll try and upload some pics or vids. Good-bye. Jan. 22 Getting the studio all set up for sessions beginning tomorrow with Paul Fox (our new producer). We're spending most of today setting up gear, Changing drum heads and guitar strings, backing up hard drives, etc., etc. For all interested in Paul, and our working with him, here's the quick skinny: We listened to his albums growing up (Bjork, 10,000 Maniacs, XTC, Phish, Grant Lee Buffalo he even played keyboards on Motley Crew's "Shout at the Devil" and the score to "Flash Dance"). We've enjoyed his work (maybe with the exception of the last two mentions) and dreamed of working with him. Some events transpired allowing us to come into contact with Paul and his management. Chats began first over the phone, then began flights and long drives to visit and talk more music. There was a bond, both musically and personally, and we felt even happier about the opportunity. When he told us he produced the band Jason Schwartzman plays with (Jason was Max Fisher in the movie Rushmore....a favorite among the band), we knew it was a perfect fit (don't worry, we didn't really make such a huge decision off such a small detail...however cool we thought that was). Blah, blah, blah...we talked more. We listened to more music. He saw us play in L.A. We listened to some of his latest work (yet to be released), and started talking schedules. Here we are, a few hours from beginning production on new songs. What will come next is really all up in the air. He'll be here a few weeks, and we'll keep you posted on the daily activities via photos, journal entries, and perhaps video. So check back when you're bored. Jan. 20 We're going to confuse (maybe anger) a lot of people, but we're not going
to be able to play at the SXSW finals tonight. Anyone that might hate
us for this, we just ask that you'll try to understand. We wish our friends
Hudson River School the best of luck. Jan. 16 Well, another night of vigorous South by Southwest competition and by some miracle we took first place again. There were some GREAT bands tonight. It's amazing there is this much talent in Utah. But not only were the other bands incredible players, they were extremely cool. Strangers competitors coming up introducing themselves and letting us know they enjoyed the set. How cool is that? Lumpy's is lumperific. Great club. We're excited to head back to the Zephyr Sunday night for the finals. Paul Fox, our producer, will be flying in that afternoon, so maybe we can even talk him into enjoying the Salt Lake City night life. Now we must sleep for about 3 hours and then get up to go live on Fox News at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning. And they say being a rockstar is so glamorous. Not from what we can tell. Jan. 13 We finished first place in the South by Southwest preliminaries tonight. Some very cool bands played. We're still waiting to hear how some of our friends made out at other clubs. Hope to see you at the semifinals on Wednesday at Charlie's in Salt Lake City. Details will be posted on the live page. Jan. 9 And a Happy New Year to ya. We've started with rehearsals, getting ready for all the shows coming up. Between the live radio show tonight, christening the Thanksgiving Point Barn next week, South by Southwest competition and the Olympics, we got ourselves a busy schedule. Tried writing some new songs in the last few practices. We started talking about using the same formulas to write songs for the past 6+ years. Poppier stuff comes out during rehearsals, the more moody and mellow stuff comes out while recording in the studio. It has seemed to work for us pretty good. We talked about experimenting more in our writing approach. Amy suggested finding an old church with an organ and bringing in different instruments to play around with. Sounds fun. We're waiting for the go ahead to share some pretty cool news with you...keep checking back...we should get word any day.
P.S. The page was getting a little long (5 years of news) so we've broken the news down by posting all previous news items here. |
